Lloyd Hurt

Born September 9, 1919 in Las Cruces, NM (actually Hill, NM) Preceded in death by his son, Rick Lee Hurt and his brothers Alvin Duncan and Everett Cecil Hurt; his parents, Lloyd Lee and Elizabeth Stewart Hurt. His father was nine out ten children came to NM from Memphis, TN to help build the railroad. It was there that he met his future bride, Elizabeth, a rancher’s daughter from Leasburg, NM. They married on December 4, 1918. The two choose to homestead around Hill, NM. Lloyd was born a year later. His original birth was certified on a sheet of Big Chief notebook paper by a midwife, with instructions to file at the county seat of Dona Ana County, the first chance they got. Lloyd claimed Las Cruces as his home. He served in the US Army during WWII and met Ruth in Mineral Wells, TX where he was stationed. They were married December 4, 1943 and moved back to Las Cruces after his Army service. He worked as an auto mechanic and then went to work for the US Fish and Wildlife Dept. They lived and worked at the Jornada and Bosque del Apache wildlife refuge. After reenlisting in the Air Force, he achieved the rank of Staff Sgt, they retired in Albuquerque. He then worked for the US Post Office. He is survived by his wife Ruth Louise Stroud; daughters, Shirley Richardson and Sharon Easley; seven grandchildren, Michael Richardson, Mary Davis, Brian Richardson, Michelle Hurt, Jason Hurt, Kimberley Hurt, and John David Easley; four great-grandchildren, Morgan Davis, Wyatt Davis, Brady Richardson, and Caden Easley. The happiest time of his life seemed to be building a log cabin in the Bravos near Chama, NM. This was both a time and labor intensive job, but with Ruth; as well as some help from a few good neighbors, they produced a beautiful home with a deck overlooking the river valley. It served them well for friends and grandchildren. He loved the mountains and wildlife very much. Lloyd enjoyed gardening, tending his roses and working on his cars and truck. His daughters remember him, always in blue jeans, boots, and his beloved white T-shirt that was so worn, you could read through it (he still owned that shirt). The girls said he smelled like motor oil and gun oil. He took very good care of his guns and enjoyed hunting deer and quail. The family knew it was November when Lloyd and Bill Copeland (the only man Lloyd would hunt with) headed for Mt. Taylor. It was on one of these trips that his friend had a heart attack. Lloyd carried him down the mountain to the truck and headed for the hospital. His friend survived, but sadly, their hunting days were over. Lloyd retired from the Post Office in 1996 and enjoyed working on the house and cabin, until his health no longer allowed him to do so. Lloyd Hurt lived life on his own terms. He lost his battle with his health issues on Friday, January 11, 2013 at the age of 93. Friends may visit FRENCH – Lomas on Friday, January 18, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will held on Saturday, January 19, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas. Interment will be Monday, January 21, 2013, 9:00 a.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
