Celia Romero

ROMERO, CELIA G.Age 94, passed away on September 19, 2012. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, J. Mike Romero. Celia was born in La Joya, NM, on February 9, 1918, to Beltran Baca (BB) Griego and Elvira Chavez. She grew up in Belen, NM. Celia attended UNM and Highlands University, receiving her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education from Highlands. She was a teacher from the age of 18. Celia taught at various schools, including a one-room school house in Fence Lake, NM, Paul Henry Elementary in Las Vegas, NM, and Peralta Elementary in the Los Lunas School District. Celia served as a Master Teacher and teaching principal in Los Lunas and was active in Delta Kappa Gamma, a sorority for teachers. Celia is survived by her four children; Leo (Robin), Patricia, Nancy, and Ray (Rosie); six grandchildren, Michael (Gauri) Romero, Gregory (Iliana) Romero, Melissa (Todd) Mego, Nick (Cameron) Cova, Bianca (Steve) Kooi, and Paloma Romero; six great grandchildren, Vikas B. Romero, Vishal B. Romero, Ariela Romero, Andres Romero, Aviana Cova, and Naomi Cova; sister, Dru Summey; and brothers, Alex Griego and Edwin Griego. She loved sewing and made embroidered quilts for all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, finishing her last one at the age of 93. Everyone who knew Celia knows that she loved children and loved teaching them. She taught in Elementary School for 25 years, and after she retired, did volunteer work helping children improve their reading skills. Above all, Celia was a wonderful mother who, with her husband, Mike, instilled in their children the values of honesty, integrity, industry, and educational achievement. The family wishes to express appreciation for the loving care Celia received in her last year provided by Heritage Hospice and the caregivers and wait staff at Atria Vista del Rio Senior Assisted Living where Celia was an Ambassador to new residents. Memorial contributions may be made in the memory of Celia G. Romero to the Barrett Foundation, 10300 Constitution, NE, ALB 87112 or N.M. Highlands University.
