Annie Stein Flatow

Our beautiful, loving Mother, born June 14, 1921 in San Antonia Texas to Julius M. Stein and Rebecca Freedman, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 10, 2014. She was raised in Pampa, Texas with her two older sisters, Bessie and Yeta, until she attended the University of Texas, Austin. In 1943 she married Max Flatow (whom she had loved since she was 12) in Trinidad, West Indies, where Max was stationed during WWII. Soon after, they were transferred to Los Alamos for the Manhattan Project until the War ended. They then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they established their home, raised four children and traveled the world together. She was a loving sister, wife, mother, and the heart of her family for 63 years; the ultimate caregiver for the entire family and an ever present helper and cheerleader in time of trouble. While raising four children and maintaining a complicated household, she also found time to attend the Cranbrook Academy of Fine Arts in 1956 where she studied ceramics. She volunteered in many organizations among her favorites were Eastern Star, Red Cross, Veterans Hospital, ORT, Hadassah, Rainbow Girls, Girl and Boys Scouts, and the public schools. Her passions were traveling, reading, gardening, sewing, shopping, music, art and spending time with family. She instilled in her children a love of learning, compassion for others and a wonderful sense of humor always accompanied by a beautiful smile. Her legacy is the lesson of unconditional love. During the last ten years of her life she lived with her youngest daughter, Jaclyn Daiches and her extended family in Fort Worth, TX. There she was active in the Jewish Family Services seniors program. She loved this program and became their unofficial greeter, spreading her warmth and joy to all in her presence. She is survived by her older sister, Bessie Brown (who is 99 years old); her four children, Marsha Bronsky (Edwin), Sara Leach (Arthur), Jaclyn Daiches (Alvin), and Tobias Flatow (Sarah); six grandchildren, Sarah, Stein, Tracy, Jason, Julie, Dana; and twelve great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Yeta Flatow in 2012 at age 96. Her beloved husband, Max Flatow, died in 2003 at 88, and she has finally been granted her wish to be reunited with him. May they rest in peace. The family would like to thank Dr. Chau Pham, Hospice and the wonderful caregivers, coordinated by Lany Tjahjadi, who have been devoted to Annie and guided all of us though these past difficult weeks.
